Near-infrared observations of galaxies in Pisces-Perseus. V. On the origin of bulges
We investigate the scaling relations of bulge and disk structuralparameters for a sample of 108 disk galaxies. Structural parameters ofindividual galaxies are obtained from two-dimensional bulge/diskdecomposition of their H-band surface brightness distributions. Bulgesare modelled with a generalized exponential (Sérsic) withvariable integer shape index n. We find that bulge effectivescalelengths reB and luminosity MBincrease with increasing n, but disk properties are independent of bulgeshape. As Hubble type T increases, bulges become less luminous and theirmean effective surface brightness <μeB>gets fainter; disk <μeD> shows a similar,but much weaker, trend. When bulge parameters(<μeB>, reB,MB) are compared with disk ones(<μeD>, reD,MD), they are tightly correlated for n=1 bulges. Thecorrelations gradually worsen with increasing n such that n=4 bulgesappear virtually independent of their disks. The Kormendy relation,<μeB> vs. reB, isshown to depend on bulge shape n; the two parameters are tightlycorrelated in n=4 bulges (r=0.8), and increasingly less so as ndecreases; disk <μeD> andreD are well correlated (r=0.7). Bulge-to-disksize ratios reB/reD areindependent of Hubble type, but smaller for exponential bulges; the meanreB/reD for n=1 bulges is 4times smaller than that for n=4, with a spread which is 9 times smaller.Strongly barred SB galaxies with exponential bulges are more luminousthan their unbarred counterparts. Exponential bulges appear to beclosely related to their underlying disks, while bulges with higher nvalues are less so; n=4 bulges and their disks apparently have norelation. We interpret our results as being most consistent with asecular evolutionary scenario, in which dissipative processes in thedisk are responsible for building up the bulges in most spirals.Based on observations at the TIRGO, NOT, and VATT telescopes. An Ultraviolet/Optical Atlas of Bright Galaxies
We present wide-field imagery and photometry of 43 selected nearbygalaxies of all morphological types at ultraviolet and opticalwavelengths. The ultraviolet (UV) images, in two broad bands at 1500 and2500 Å, were obtained using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope(UIT) during the Astro-1 Spacelab mission. The UV images have ~3"resolution, and the comparison sets of ground-based CCD images (in oneor more of B, V, R, and Hα) have pixel scales and fields of viewclosely matching the UV frames. The atlas consists of multiband imagesand plots of UV/optical surface brightness and color profiles. Otherassociated parameters, such as integrated photometry and half-lightradii, are tabulated. In an appendix, we discuss the sensitivity ofdifferent wavebands to a galaxy's star formation history in the form of``history weighting functions'' and emphasize the importance of UVobservations as probes of evolution during the past 10-1000 Myr. We findthat UV galaxy morphologies are usually significantly different fromvisible band morphologies as a consequence of spatially inhomogeneousstellar populations. Differences are quite pronounced for systems in themiddle range of Hubble types, Sa through Sc, but less so for ellipticalsor late-type disks. Normal ellipticals and large spiral bulges arefainter and more compact in the UV. However, they typically exhibitsmooth UV profiles with far-UV/optical color gradients which are largerthan any at optical/IR wavelengths. The far-UV light in these cases isprobably produced by extreme horizontal branch stars and theirdescendants in the dominant, low-mass, metal-rich population. The coolstars in the large bulges of Sa and Sb spirals fade in the UV while hotOB stars in their disks brighten, such that their Hubble classificationsbecome significantly later. In the far-UV, early-type spirals oftenappear as peculiar, ringlike systems. In some spiral disks, UV-brightstructures closely outline the spiral pattern; in others, the disks canbe much more fragmented and chaotic than at optical wavelengths.Contributions by bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to the integratedUV light in our sample range from less than 10% to nearly 100%. A numberof systems have unusual UV-bright structures in their inner disks,including rings, compact knots, and starburst nuclei, which could easilydominate the UV light in high-redshift analogs. A significant butvariable fraction of the far-UV light in spiral disks is diffuse ratherthan closely concentrated to star-forming regions. Dust in normal spiraldisks does not control UV morphologies, even in some highly inclineddisk systems. The heaviest extinction is apparently confined to thinlayers and the immediate vicinity of young H II complexes; the UV lightemerges from thicker star distributions, regions evacuated of dust byphotodestruction or winds, or by virtue of strong dust clumpiness. Onlyin cases where the dust layers are disturbed does dust appear to be amajor factor in UV morphology. The UV-bright plume of M82 indicates thatdust scattering of UV photons can be important in some cases. In acompanion paper, we discuss far-UV data from the Astro-2 mission andoptical comparisons for another 35 galaxies, emphasizing face-onspirals.

A Comparison of Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope Far-Ultraviolet and Hα Star Formation Rates
We have used archival ultraviolet (UV) imaging of 50 nearby star-forminggalaxies obtained with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) to deriveintegrated near-UV and far-UV magnitudes, and have combined these datawith Hα, far-infrared, and thermal radio continuum measurements toexplore the consistency of UV and Hα star formation rates (SFRs).In agreement with previous studies, we find that the UV and HαSFRs are qualitatively consistent, even before corrections forextinction are applied. The uncorrected UV SFRs are systematically lowerby a factor of 1.5 (with a factor of 2 scatter) among luminous galaxieswith SFR>~1 Msolar yr-1, indicating a highereffective attenuation of the far-UV radiation. Among less luminousgalaxies there is no significant offset between the Hα and far-UVSFR scales. This behavior is consistent with that of higher redshiftsamples observed by Sullivan et al., Glazebrook et al., and Yan et al.for comparable ranges of galaxy luminosities and absolute SFRs.Far-infrared and thermal radio continuum data available for a subset ofour sample allow us to estimate the attenuation in the UV and atHα independently. The UV and Hα attenuations appear to becorrelated, and confirm systematically higher attenuations in the UV.Although the galaxies in our sample show modest levels of attenuation(with median values of 0.9 mag at Hα and 1.4 mag at 1550 Å),the range across the sample is large, ~4 mag for Hα and >~5 magin the far-UV (1550 Å). This indicates that the application of asingle characteristic extinction correction to Hα or UV SFRs isonly realistic for large, well-defined and well-studied galaxy samples,and that extinction bias may be important for UV oremission-line-selected samples of star-forming galaxies.

An Hα survey of eight Abell clusters: the dependence of tidally induced star formation on cluster density
We have undertaken a survey of Hα emission in a substantiallycomplete sample of CGCG galaxies of types Sa and later within 1.5 Abellradii of the centres of eight low-redshift Abell clusters (Abell 262,347, 400, 426, 569, 779, 1367 and 1656). Some 320 galaxies weresurveyed, of which 116 were detected in emission (39 per cent ofspirals, 75 per cent of peculiars). Here we present previouslyunpublished data for 243 galaxies in seven clusters. Detected emissionis classified as `compact' or `diffuse'. From an analysis of the fullsurvey sample, we confirm our previous identification of compact anddiffuse emission with circumnuclear starburst and disc emissionrespectively. The circumnuclear emission is associated either with thepresence of a bar, or with a disturbed galaxy morphology indicative ofongoing tidal interactions (whether galaxy-galaxy, galaxy-group, orgalaxy-cluster). The frequency of such tidally induced (circumnuclear)starburst emission in spirals increases from regions of lower to higherlocal galaxy surface density, and from clusters with lower to highercentral galaxy space density. The percentages of spirals classed asdisturbed and of galaxies classified as peculiar show a similar trend.These results suggest that tidal interactions for spirals are morefrequent in regions of higher local density and for clusters with highercentral galaxy density. The prevalence of such tidal interactions inclusters is expected from recent theoretical modelling of clusters witha non-static potential undergoing collapse and infall. Furthermore, inaccord with this picture, we suggest that peculiar galaxies arepredominantly ongoing mergers. We conclude that tidal interactions arelikely to be the main mechanism for the transformation of spirals to S0sin clusters. This mechanism operates more efficiently in higher densityenvironments, as is required by the morphological type-local surfacedensity (T-Σ) relation for galaxies in clusters. For regions ofcomparable local density, the frequency of tidally induced starburstemission is greater in clusters with higher central galaxy density. Thisimplies that, for a given local density, morphological transformation ofdisc galaxies proceeds more rapidly in clusters of higher central galaxydensity. This effect is considered to be the result of subclustermerging, and could account for the previously considered anomalousabsence of a significant T-Σ relation for irregular clusters atintermediate redshift.

Arcsecond Positions of UGC Galaxies
We present accurate B1950 and J2000 positions for all confirmed galaxiesin the Uppsala General Catalog (UGC). The positions were measuredvisually from Digitized Sky Survey images with rms uncertaintiesσ<=[(1.2")2+(θ/100)2]1/2,where θ is the major-axis diameter. We compared each galaxymeasured with the original UGC description to ensure high reliability.The full position list is available in the electronic version only.

The galaxy cluster Abell 426 (Perseus). A catalogue of 660 galaxy positions, isophotal magnitudes and morphological types
We present a homogeneous catalogue of galaxies in the field of thenearby galaxy cluster A 426 (Perseus) based on a survey of digitisedSchmidt plates taken with the Tautenburg 2 m telescope in the B band.Accurate positions, morphological types, B25 isophotalmagnitudes, angular radii and position angles are given for 660 galaxieswithin a field of about 10 square-degrees, centred on alpha = 3() h 21()min, delta = 41degr 33' (J2000). When available, the radial velocity andthe most common name taken from NED or PGC are included. The cataloguecomprises galaxies brighter than B25~19.5. The estimatedlimit of completeness is B25~18. Two thirds of the galaxiesare published for the first time. The galaxy positions are measured witha mean accuracy of 0farcs5 , the photometric accuracy is of the order of0.1 to 0.2 mag depending on image crowding and galaxy shape.Morphological properties were evaluated from the visual inspections ofboth deep images obtained from the digital co-addition of a large numberof plates and higher-resolution images from single plates taken undergood seeing conditions. The superimposed images unveil faint structuresdown to mu_B ~ 27 mag arcsec(-2) . The catalogue is applied to a studyof statistical properties of the galaxies in A 426: projecteddistribution of morphological types, segregation of morphological types,position of the cluster centre, distribution of galaxy position angles,type-dependent luminosity functions, and total B-luminosity of the thecluster. In agreement with previous studies, we find a relativespiral-deficiency in the central region (r <~ 30'). The percentage ofidentified S+Irr increases, however, increases from 30% in the centre tomore than 50% in the outer parts. The projected distributions of early-and late-type galaxies are not co-centred. The total luminosity of allsupposed member galaxies in the surveyed area is estimated to(6.5+/-0.9)\ 10(12) x h50(-2) blue solar luminosities. We donot analyse in detail possible substructures in the projecteddistribution of galaxies. However, we found a pronounced clump ofgalaxies at alpha (J2000.0) = 3() h20fm4 , delta (J2000.0) = 43degr4 ',which is shown to be a background cluster at z~ 0.050. Near-infrared observations of galaxies in Pisces-Perseus. I. vec H-band surface photometry of 174 spiral
We present near-infrared, H-band (1.65 $() μm), surface photometry of174 spiral galaxies in the area of the Pisces-Perseus supercluster. Theimages, acquired with the ARNICA camera mounted on various telescopes,are used to derive radial profiles of surface brightness, ellipticities,and position angles, together with global parameters such as H-bandmagnitudes and diameters Radial profiles in tabular form and images FITSfiles are also available upon request from gmorio@arcetri.astro.it.}.The mean relation between H-band isophotal diameter D_{21.5} and theB-band D25 implies a B-H color of the outer disk bluer than3.5; moreover, D_{21.5}/D25 depends on (global) color andabsolute luminosity. The correlations among the various photometricparameters suggest a ratio between isophotal radius D_{21.5}/2 and diskscale length of ~ m3.5 and a mean disk central brightness ~ meq 17.5H-mag arcsec^{-2}. We confirm the trend of the concentration indexC31$ with absolute luminosity and, to a lesser degree, withmorphological type. We also assess the influence of non-axisymmetricstructures on the radial profiles and on the derived parameters. Basedon observations at the TIRGO, NOT, and VATT telescopes. Total magnitude, radius, colour indices, colour gradients and photometric type of galaxies
We present a catalogue of aperture photometry of galaxies, in UBVRI,assembled from three different origins: (i) an update of the catalogueof Buta et al. (1995) (ii) published photometric profiles and (iii)aperture photometry performed on CCD images. We explored different setsof growth curves to fit these data: (i) The Sersic law, (ii) The net ofgrowth curves used for the preparation of the RC3 and (iii) A linearinterpolation between the de Vaucouleurs (r(1/4) ) and exponential laws.Finally we adopted the latter solution. Fitting these growth curves, wederive (1) the total magnitude, (2) the effective radius, (3) the colourindices and (4) gradients and (5) the photometric type of 5169 galaxies.The photometric type is defined to statistically match the revisedmorphologic type and parametrizes the shape of the growth curve. It iscoded from -9, for very concentrated galaxies, to +10, for diffusegalaxies. Based in part on observations collected at the Haute-ProvenceObservatory.

Morphological classification and structural parameters of galaxies in the Coma and Perseus clusters
We present the results of an isophotal shape analysis of galaxies in theComa and Perseus clusters. These data, together with those of twoprevious papers, provide two complete samples of galaxies with reliableHubble types in rich clusters: 1) all galaxies brighter than m_b = 16.5falling within one degree (=2.3 Mpc) from the center of the Coma cluster(187 galaxies), 2) all galaxies brighter than m_Zwicky=15.7 in a regionof 5 degr 3' times 5 degr 27' around the center of the Perseus cluster(139 galaxies). These two complete samples cover 5 orders of magnitudein galaxy density and span areas of 91 and 17 Mpc^2, clustercentricradii up to 6.4 and 2.3 Mpc, for Perseus and Coma respectively. Theywill be used in subsequent papers to study the dependence of galaxytypes on cluster environment and as reference samples in comparisonswith distant clusters. An image database. II. Catalogue between δ=-30deg and δ=70deg.
A preliminary list of 68.040 galaxies was built from extraction of35.841 digitized images of the Palomar Sky Survey (Paper I). For eachgalaxy, the basic parameters are obtained: coordinates, diameter, axisratio, total magnitude, position angle. On this preliminary list, weapply severe selection rules to get a catalog of 28.000 galaxies, wellidentified and well documented. For each parameter, a comparison is madewith standard measurements. The accuracy of the raw photometricparameters is quite good despite of the simplicity of the method.Without any local correction, the standard error on the total magnitudeis about 0.5 magnitude up to a total magnitude of B_T_=17. Significantsecondary effects are detected concerning the magnitudes: distance toplate center effect and air-mass effect.

A study of environmental influences on the structure of spiral galaxy disks
The results of photographic surface photometry of late-type spiralgalaxies in the clusters Abell 426, Abell 1367, and Abell 2151 arepresented. U- and R-band surface brightness profile properties areanalyzed in terms of the following environmental parameters: theprojected distance from cluster center, the projected distance to thenearest neighbor, and the local projected galaxy density. No significantcorrelation is seen between the structure of the galaxies and theprojected distance from cluster center. The most pronounced correlationfound was with the projected galaxy density; both the isophotal radiusand the slope of the disk brightness profiles are affected, and thecolor profile may be affected. These influences may be attributed toenvironmental processes: ram pressure stripping of the galaxy gas by theintracluster medium and tidal stripping of the stellar material by theprolonged exposure to the gravitational field of subclusters.

The dynamics of rich clusters of galaxies. II - The Perseus cluster
The dynamics of the Perseus cluster are analyzed using self-consistentequilibrium analytical models. Using existing data in the literatureplus new radial velocities reported here, composite surface density andvelocity dispersion profiles are derived. These profiles have beencompared with dynamical models described by Kent and Gunn (1982). Thebest fit suggest the presence of a significant degree of anisotropy inthe velocity distribution: galaxy orbits are constrained to pass withina radius of seven cluster radii, or 1.3 deg of the cluster center. ForHubble constant = 50, a core radius of 340 kpc 11 arcmin and a mass tovisual light ratio M/L = 300 are found. Using these results, X-rayobservations of the intracluster medium in Perseus are reanalyzed. Apreviously noted discrepancy between the observed temperature of the hotgas and the cluster velocity dispersion is reduced but not eliminated. Acooling accretion flow previously deduced to exist in this cluster isshown to extend to only about one-third of the cluster radius.

Redshift-magnitude bands and the evolution of galaxies. I - New observations
Well-defined samples of galaxy redshifts and magnitudes for the Perseusand A1367 clusters are obtained from a combination of new and existingobservations. For the Perseus cluster, identifications, 1950 positions,distance from cluster center in degrees, mp and V(6)magnitudes, redshifts corrected for earth orbital and galactic rotation,and comments are provided. Information for the 50 central A1367 galaxiesincludes identification, mp, redshift and redshift source,morphology, and comments.
