Radio and Far-Infrared Emission as Tracers of Star Formation and Active Galactic Nuclei in Nearby Cluster Galaxies
We have studied the radio and far-infrared (FIR) emission from 114galaxies in the seven nearest clusters (<100 Mpc) with prominentX-ray emission to investigate the impact of the cluster environment onthe star formation and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in themember galaxies. The X-ray selection criterion is adopted to focus onthe most massive and dynamically relaxed clusters. A large majority ofcluster galaxies show an excess in radio emission over that predictedfrom the radio-FIR correlation, the fraction of sources with radioexcess increases toward cluster cores, and the radial gradient in theFIR/radio flux ratio is a result of radio enhancement. Of theradio-excess sources, 70% are early-type galaxies, and the same fractionhost an AGN. The galaxy density drops by a factor of 10 from thecomposite cluster center out to 1.5 Mpc, yet galaxies show no change inFIR properties over this region and show no indication of masssegregation. We have examined in detail the physical mechanisms thatmight impact the FIR and radio emission of cluster galaxies. Whilecollisional heating of dust may be important for galaxies in clustercenters, it appears to have a negligible effect on the observed FIRemission for our sample galaxies. The correlations between radio and FIRluminosity and radius could be explained by magnetic compression fromthermal intracluster medium pressure. We also find that simple delayedharassment cannot fully account for the observed radio, FIR, and mid-IRproperties of cluster galaxies.

Near-infrared observations of galaxies in Pisces-Perseus. V. On the origin of bulges
We investigate the scaling relations of bulge and disk structuralparameters for a sample of 108 disk galaxies. Structural parameters ofindividual galaxies are obtained from two-dimensional bulge/diskdecomposition of their H-band surface brightness distributions. Bulgesare modelled with a generalized exponential (Sérsic) withvariable integer shape index n. We find that bulge effectivescalelengths reB and luminosity MBincrease with increasing n, but disk properties are independent of bulgeshape. As Hubble type T increases, bulges become less luminous and theirmean effective surface brightness <μeB>gets fainter; disk <μeD> shows a similar,but much weaker, trend. When bulge parameters(<μeB>, reB,MB) are compared with disk ones(<μeD>, reD,MD), they are tightly correlated for n=1 bulges. Thecorrelations gradually worsen with increasing n such that n=4 bulgesappear virtually independent of their disks. The Kormendy relation,<μeB> vs. reB, isshown to depend on bulge shape n; the two parameters are tightlycorrelated in n=4 bulges (r=0.8), and increasingly less so as ndecreases; disk <μeD> andreD are well correlated (r=0.7). Bulge-to-disksize ratios reB/reD areindependent of Hubble type, but smaller for exponential bulges; the meanreB/reD for n=1 bulges is 4times smaller than that for n=4, with a spread which is 9 times smaller.Strongly barred SB galaxies with exponential bulges are more luminousthan their unbarred counterparts. Exponential bulges appear to beclosely related to their underlying disks, while bulges with higher nvalues are less so; n=4 bulges and their disks apparently have norelation. We interpret our results as being most consistent with asecular evolutionary scenario, in which dissipative processes in thedisk are responsible for building up the bulges in most spirals.Based on observations at the TIRGO, NOT, and VATT telescopes. Kinematics of AWM and MKW Poor Clusters
We have measured 1365 redshifts to a limiting magnitude of R~15.5 in 15AWM/MKW clusters and have collected another 203 from the literature inMKW 4s, MKW 2, and MKW 2s. In AWM 7 we have extended the redshift sampleto R~18 in the cluster center. We have identified 704 cluster members in17 clusters; 201 are newly identified. We summarize the kinematics anddistributions of the cluster galaxies and provide an initial discussionof substructure, mass and luminosity segregation, spectral segregation,velocity-dispersion profiles, and the relation of the central galaxy toglobal cluster properties. We compute optical mass estimates, which wecompare with X-ray mass determinations from the literature. The clustersare in a variety of dynamical states, reflected in the three classes ofbehavior of the velocity-dispersion profile in the core: rising,falling, or flat/ambiguous. The velocity dispersion of the emission-linegalaxy population significantly exceeds that of the absorption-linegalaxies in almost all of the clusters, and the presence ofemission-line galaxies at small projected radii suggests continuinginfall of galaxies onto the clusters. The presence of a cD galaxy doesnot constrain the global cluster properties; these clusters are similarto other poor clusters that contain no cD. We use the similarity of thevelocity-dispersion profiles at small radii and the cD-like galaxies'internal velocity dispersions to argue that cD formation is a localphenomenon. Our sample establishes an empirical observational baselineof poor clusters for comparison with simulations of similar systems.Observations reported in this paper were obtained at the Multiple MirrorTelescope Observatory, a facility operated jointly by the University ofArizona and the Smithsonian Institution; at the Whipple Observatory, afacility operated jointly by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatoryand Harvard University; and at the WIYN Observatory, a joint facility ofthe University of Wisconsin-Madison, Indiana University, YaleUniversity, and the National Optical Astronomy Observatories.

Infrared to millimetre photometry of ultra-luminous IR galaxies: New evidence favouring a 3-stage dust model
Infrared to millimetre spectral energy distributions (SEDs) have beenobtained for 41 bright ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). Theobservations were carried out with ISOPHOT between 10 and 200 mu m andsupplemented for 16 sources with JCMT/SCUBA at 450 and 850 mu m and withSEST at 1.3 mm. In addition, seven sources were observed at 1.2 and 2.2mu m with the 2.2 m telescope on Calar Alto. These new SEDs representthe most complete set of infrared photometric templates obtained so faron ULIRGs in the local universe. The SEDs peak at 60-100 mu m and showoften a quite shallow Rayleigh-Jeans tail. Fits with one single modifiedblackbody yield a high FIR opacity and small dust emissivity exponentbeta < 2. However, this concept leads to conflicts with several otherobservational constraints, like the low PAH extinction or the extendedfilamentary optical morphology. A more consistent picture is obtainedusing several dust components with beta = 2, low to moderate FIR opacityand cool (50 K > T > 30 K) to cold (30 K > T > 10 K)temperatures. This provides evidence for two dust stages, the coolstarburst dominated one and the cold cirrus-like one. The third stagewith several hundred Kelvin warm dust is identified in the AGN dominatedULIRGs, showing up as a NIR-MIR power-law flux increase. While AGNs andSBs appear indistinguishable at FIR and submm wavelengths, they differin the NIR-MIR. This suggests that the cool FIR emitting dust is notrelated to the AGN, and that the AGN only powers the warm and hot dust.In comparison with optical and MIR spectroscopy, a criterion based onthe SED shapes and the NIR colours is established to reveal AGNs amongULIRGs. Also the possibility of recognising evolutionary trends amongthe ULIRGs via the relative amounts of cold, cool and warm dustcomponents is investigated. Kinematics and Mass Profile of AWM 7
We have measured 492 redshifts (311 new) in the direction of the poorcluster AWM 7 and have identified 179 cluster members (73 new). We usetwo independent methods to derive a self-consistent mass profile, underthe assumptions that the absorption-line galaxies are virialized andthat they trace an underlying Navarro, Frenk, & White (NFW) dark matterprofile: (1) we fit such an NFW profile to the radial distribution ofgalaxy positions and to the velocity dispersion profile; (2) we applythe virial mass estimator to the cluster. With these assumptions, thetwo independent mass estimates agree to ~15% within 1.7 h-1Mpc, the radial extent of our data; we find an enclosed mass~(3+/-0.5)x1014 h-1 Msolar. The largestpotential source of systematic error is the inclusion of youngemission-line galaxies in the mass estimate. We investigate the behaviorof the surface term correction to the virial mass estimator underseveral assumptions about the velocity anisotropy profile, still withinthe context of the NFW model, and remark on the sensitivity of derivedmass profiles to outliers. We find that one must have data out to alarge radius in order to determine the mass robustly, and that thesurface term correction is unreliable at small radii.

Arcsecond Positions of UGC Galaxies
We present accurate B1950 and J2000 positions for all confirmed galaxiesin the Uppsala General Catalog (UGC). The positions were measuredvisually from Digitized Sky Survey images with rms uncertaintiesσ<=[(1.2")2+(θ/100)2]1/2,where θ is the major-axis diameter. We compared each galaxymeasured with the original UGC description to ensure high reliability.The full position list is available in the electronic version only.

Galaxy coordinates. II. Accurate equatorial coordinates for 17298 galaxies
Using images of the Digitized Sky Survey we measured coodinates for17298 galaxies having poorly defined coordinates. As a control, wemeasured with the same method 1522 galaxies having accurate coordinates.The comparison with our own measurements shows that the accuracy of themethod is about 6 arcsec on each axis (RA and DEC).

Near-infrared observations of galaxies in Pisces-Perseus. I. vec H-band surface photometry of 174 spiral
We present near-infrared, H-band (1.65 $() μm), surface photometry of174 spiral galaxies in the area of the Pisces-Perseus supercluster. Theimages, acquired with the ARNICA camera mounted on various telescopes,are used to derive radial profiles of surface brightness, ellipticities,and position angles, together with global parameters such as H-bandmagnitudes and diameters Radial profiles in tabular form and images FITSfiles are also available upon request from gmorio@arcetri.astro.it.}.The mean relation between H-band isophotal diameter D_{21.5} and theB-band D25 implies a B-H color of the outer disk bluer than3.5; moreover, D_{21.5}/D25 depends on (global) color andabsolute luminosity. The correlations among the various photometricparameters suggest a ratio between isophotal radius D_{21.5}/2 and diskscale length of ~ m3.5 and a mean disk central brightness ~ meq 17.5H-mag arcsec^{-2}. We confirm the trend of the concentration indexC31$ with absolute luminosity and, to a lesser degree, withmorphological type. We also assess the influence of non-axisymmetricstructures on the radial profiles and on the derived parameters. Basedon observations at the TIRGO, NOT, and VATT telescopes. A Photometric and Kinematic Study of AWM 7
We have measured redshifts and Kron-Cousins R-band magnitudes for asample of galaxies in the poor cluster AWM 7. We have measured redshiftsfor 172 galaxies; 106 of these are cluster members. We determine theluminosity function (LF) from a photometric survey of the central 1.2 x1.2 h^-1 Mpc. The LF has a bump at the bright end and a faint-end slopeof alpha = -1.37 +/- 0.16, populated almost exclusively byabsorption-line galaxies. The cluster velocity dispersion is lower inthe core (~530 km s^-1) than at the outskirts (~680 km s^-1), consistentwith the cooling flow seen in the X-ray. The cold core extends ~150 h^-1kpc from the cluster center. The Kron-Cousins R-band mass-to-light ratioof the system is 650 +/- 170 h M_ȯ/L_ȯ, substantially lower thanprevious optical determinations, but consistent with most previous X-raydeterminations. We adopt H_0 = 100 h km s^-1 Mpc^-1 throughout thispaper; at the mean cluster redshift (5247 +/- 76 km s^-1), 1 h^-1 Mpcsubtends 65.5′.

Catalogue of HI maps of galaxies. I.
A catalogue is presented of galaxies having large-scale observations inthe HI line. This catalogue collects from the literature the informationthat characterizes the observations in the 21-cm line and the way thatthese data were presented by means of maps, graphics and tables, forshowing the distribution and kinematics of the gas. It containsfurthermore a measure of the HI extension that is detected at the levelof the maximum sensitivity reached in the observations. This catalogueis intended as a guide for references on the HI maps published in theliterature from 1953 to 1995 and is the basis for the analysis of thedata presented in Paper II. Kinematics of the local universe. VII. New 21-cm line measurements of 2112 galaxies
This paper presents 2112 new 21-cm neutral hydrogen line measurementscarried out with the meridian transit Nan\c cay radiotelescope. Amongthese data we give also 213 new radial velocities which complement thoselisted in three previous papers of this series. These new measurements,together with the HI data collected in LEDA, put to 6 700 the number ofgalaxies with 21-cm line width, radial velocity, and apparent diameterin the so-called KLUN sample. Kinematics and dynamics of the MKW/AWM poor clusters
We report 472 new redshifts for 416 galaxies in the regions of the 23poor clusters of galaxies originally identified by Morgan, Kayser, andWhite (MKW), and Albert, White, and Morgan (AWM). Eighteen of the poorclusters now have 10 or more available redshifts within 1.5/h Mpc of thecentral galaxy; 11 clusters have at least 20 available redshifts. Basedon the 21 clusters for which we have sufficient velocity information,the median velocity scale is 336 km/s, a factor of 2 smaller than foundfor rich clusters. Several of the poor clusters exhibit complex velocitydistributions due to the presence of nearby clumps of galaxies. We checkon the velocity of the dominant galaxy in each poor cluster relative tothe remaining cluster members. Significantly high relative velocities ofthe dominant galaxy are found in only 4 of 21 poor clusters, 3 of whichwe suspect are due to contamination of the parent velocity distribution.Several statistical tests indicate that the D/cD galaxies are at thekinematic centers of the parent poor cluster velocity distributions.Mass-to-light ratios for 13 of the 15 poor clusters for which we havethe required data are in the range 50 less than or = M/LB(0)less than or = 200 solar mass/solar luminosity. The complex nature ofthe regions surrounding many of the poor clusters suggests that thesegroupings may represent an early epoch of cluster formation. Forexample, the poor clusters MKW7 and MKWS are shown to be gravitationallybound and likely to merge to form a richer cluster within the nextseveral Gyrs. Eight of the nine other poor clusters for which simpletwo-body dynamical models can be carried out are consistent with beingbound to other clumps in their vicinity. Additional complex systems withmore than two gravitationally bound clumps are observed among the poorclusters.

A 21 CM survey of the Pisces-Perseus supercluster. III - The region north of +38 degrees
As part of a comprehensive survey of galaxies in the region of thePisces-Perseus supercluster and its surroundings, 21-cm lineobservations obtained with the NRAO 91-m telescope are presented for 383galaxies in the right ascension range from 22 to 10 hr and north of +38deg declination. Recent improvements to the Green Bank receiver/feedsystem have dramatically raised detection rates at the distance ofPisces-Perseus (cz = +5000 km/s). The present study has contributed todouble the number of known redshifts outside rich clusters in thissection of the sky. The H I content of the current sample, as expressedin terms of the H I mass expected for a galaxy of the same optical sizeand morphology, matches the standard of normalcy established forisolated galaxies.

Seven poor clusters of galaxies
The measurement of 83 new redshifts from galaxies in the region of sevenof the poor clusters of galaxies identified by Morgan et al (1975) andAlbert et al (1977) has been followed by an estimation of cluster massesthrough the application of both the virial theorem and the projected masmethod. For each system, these two estimates are consistent. For the twoclusters with highest X-ray luminosities, the line-of-sight velocitydispersions are about 700 km/sec, while for the five other clusters, thedispersions are of the order of less than about 370 km/sec. The D or cDgalaxy in each poor cluster is at the kinematic center of each system.
